There is nothing I dread So much, as a Division of the Republic into two great Parties, each arranged under its Leader, and concerting Measures in opposition to each other. This, in my humble Apprehension is to be dreaded as the greatest political Evil, under our Constitution.
– John Adams –Independents4NJ brings together independents, democrats, and republicans who believe:
New Jersey’s 2.5 Million Independent Voters Should Not Be Forced to Join A Party In order to vote in the primaries.
The people, not the parties should control our electoral system.
All voters in New Jersey should have the right to vote in all taxpayer funded elections.

Turnout in New Jersey’s primaries is generally less than 12%. Yes, that’s correct: less than 12%. And yet, most of the elections in New Jersey are decided in the primaries.
In the 2021 State Assembly races, 92.7% of incumbents won the primary and then the General Election (64 of 69).
In the State Senate, 97% of incumbents won the Primary and then the General Election (34 of 35).
Our General Elections are rarely competitive. The candidate who wins the primary, wins the General Election. If we want to impact on the issues our state is facing, we have to begin to vote in the primaries.
Most of us don’t vote in the primaries because we:
- Are independents (2.5M or 37% of voters) and do not want to be forced to join a party in order to vote in a taxpayer-funded election
- Don’t think the Primaries matter
- Think Primaries are for the “insiders”
- Believe the General Election is the most important election
2.5M (over 1/3) of Voters in NJ Are Independents. The State calls us “unaffiliated.” As independents, we are forced to join a party in order to vote in the most important elections in our state. No one should be excluded from a taxpayer-funded election. Let All Voters Vote!
Are you one of the 90% who do not vote in the Primaries? What’s your reason for not voting in the Primaries?
